Video Mapping

This year Jean François Zurawik, the prestigious Director of Events for the city of Lyon, including the well-known La Fête des Lumières, joins the festival as the president of the jury for the video mapping competition. Mr. Zurawik will join distinguished local jury members and producer/partner Maxin10sity, in the selection process and deciding the Jury Prize on site during the festival.

 

Jean François Zurawik

Jean François Zurawik Studied Communication and Audiovisual Technologies in Strasbourg and Bordeaux. He created his own production and audiovisual events company in Strasbourg. With a team of ten people, he produces and directs audiovisual communications tools and provides corporate governance of institutional events and the creation of outside audiovisual performances.

Since 2003 he has held the position of Director of Events in the city of Lyon and ensures the overall coordination of the Festival of Lights. This festival, which welcomes over 2 million visitors in four nights, is a global reference in the event of urban lighting. The Festival of Lights has received the award for Best Public Event in 2007 and was also awarded the Exceptional Event in 2010 by the French professionals of the sector.

Jean Francois was the artistic director of the first Dubai Festival of Light in 2014 and he is the artistic advisor for Lumieres Hong Kong. Moreover, he is also the artistic director of the Festival de la Luz in Quito of which third edition will take place in August 2018.

As part of the BOREALIS, A Festival of Light we are featuring an Expert Talk with Jean-Francois Zurawik planned for Sunday, Oct. 14 , 1- 2 pm @MOHAI. He will talk on light art, city light and people’s playgrounds and tracking the immersive lighting experience – including an informal Q&A.

Light Art Installations

The BOREALIS Visual Arts Director for the light art installations is Mary Coss. Through two open calls, Ms. Coss led jury selection for over two dozen local, regional, and national artists, lighting designers, and artist/designer teams to represent the inaugural BOREALIS light art installations.

Mary Coss is a Seattle visual artist and Cofounder and Curator at METHOD Gallery. Her interdisciplinary sculpture and installation often incorporate light and sound, and explore the human condition through identity, memory, and time. Coss’s public and community artwork can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest.
